Parents got practical tips on reducing stress and bringing more joy to their families from world-renowned psychologists and authors Michael Thompson, Ph.D., and Rob Evans, Ed.D.
Assets School hosted a free insightful workshop to learn strategies that make parenting smoother and more effective on Thursday, February 13.
“My takeaway from the workshop was from the section on basic parenting skills and the importance of giving children latitude,” said Assets parent Shauna Zukeran (Aiden '31). “Not allowing failure doesn’t prepare them for the difficult path ahead.”
“I enjoyed both speakers and their chemistry,” said Assets parent David Castillo (Jordan '28). “One key lesson I learned is that I don’t have to lecture my child—I just need to let him do things for himself. For example, when he asks me to get him a glass of water while playing video games, even though he’s fully capable, I don’t have to step in. Another takeaway was the power of direct statements instead of long explanations. If I need him to get off the computer to complete a task he already knows he should do, I tend to over-explain. This workshop helped me realize that a simple, direct statement is far more effective.”
