Teaching history, critical thinking skills and having fun in the classroom

One way to keep his history students engaged is to make it fun.

Larry Shelvey recreated of the Battle of Santiago Bay during the Spanish-American War as a game for his  high school class.

Students were split into an American team and a Spanish team.

The Spanish team tries to escape, and the US team tries to stop them.

"Students get to try to change history by collaborating with their team and utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills," said Shelvey. "This allows them to understand the material in a more personal way.  This makes it hands-on, which students tend to like."

He has been teaching at Assets since January 2003.
