One of the many things I love and appreciate about Assets School is the Mentorship Program they offer their high school students.

I've always been of the mindset that if students were taught life skills alongside academics, they might not have as many of the challenges when entering adulthood.

At Assets, students are taught how to prepare for the real world - from filling out applications, building their resumes, crafting cover letters and practicing interview skills - they do all of this during their freshman year.

From sophomore year - on, they attend actual internships/mentorships as part of their curriculum, allowing the students firsthand experience to work at a place of employment in a field of potential interest and learn the intricacies of what it is like to do just that. They are graded on this and cannot just fluff it off, rather they are held responsible and at the end of the year, need to complete a presentation.

Over the past few weeks, Sage had to learn how to create a resume and craft a cover letter. She needed to reach out for references and incorporate this into her resume.

All culminated today, when she had to participate in her first job interview. She got ready this morning with professional attire (minus the Nike shoes!), and prepped her with a solid breakfast and what pretty much every business person has to kick start their day - caffeine from Starbucks!

Off she went, nervous and excited at the same time. A few hours ago, I got a text informing her sister and me that she had received the internship!

What a proud mama moment for me. I am excited to continue watching her journey as she navigates the real world and school.
