Harper ‘27 Shines at Poetry Out Loud Hawai‘i State Final Again

Harper ‘27 represented Assets School at the Poetry Out Loud Hawai‘i State Final for the second year. Competing on stage once again, Harper delivered powerful performances of Meanwhile by Richard Siken and Y2K by Therese Lloyd.

Reflecting on the experience, the sophomore shared, “I always appreciate meeting new people and sharing poetry. I am delighted I got to do it again.”

Harper’s dedication and presence were evident. “Harper really brought it on this time,” said Jamie Simpson Steele, Harper’s mom.

Poetry Out Loud has been inspiring young poets since the early 2000s. Daniel Kelin, Director of Drama Education at Honolulu Theatre for Youth since 1987, has played a key role in coordinating the contest for over two decades. “Anything we can do to have students cultivate voice and self-confidence,” Kelin emphasized.

Adding to the tradition, news anchor Ben Gutierrez has served as the emcee since 2009. This year’s competition occurred at the historic Tenney Theatre in St. Andrew’s Cathedral, providing a fitting stage for celebrating spoken word.

The stage runs deep in Harper’s family. In 2001, after completing graduate school in New York, Harper’s mom was hired by Daniel as a Drama teacher for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth. Harper’s dad, Aito Simpson Steele, is an entertainer at Aulani Resort, a Disney Resort & Spa. Continuing the family’s love for performance, Harper will take the stage in May for the High School Spring Play, Cancelled.
