Assets students, led by Syndee '25 and Toby '25, initiated a holiday season project at the High School. Handmade cards were created and mailed to veterans by students at both campuses. The project was inspired by Syndee's admiration for her grandfathers.
"One of my grandfathers served in the Vietnam War in the Air National Guard," Sydnee said. My other grandfather served in the Air Force. This project honored and shared my appreciation for my loved ones, and others who are active, reserve, and veteran military.”
Sydnee’s maternal grandfather, Clifford J. Kang, served in the U.S. Air Force as a ground crew chief for a KC-135 refueling tanker. He was stationed at March Air Reserve in California from February 1965 to December 1968. His duties as chief ground crew member was to maintain the operational readiness of a KC-135 jet tanker and to go on all deployments overseas.
Sydnee’s paternal grandfather, Maxillindo Costales Rol, served in the Air National Guard from 1965 to 1969. His work in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 was as a medical evacuation helicopter crewman. He also served as the chief helicopter mechanic in Vietnam.
“My uncle and my grandfather are veterans,” said Mikaela ‘34 from our K-8 campus. I liked making the cards for the veterans because they protect our country.”
The cards are given to the nonprofit organization A Million Thanks founded in 2004.
