Two tourists were impressed by Matthew ‘26 and his knowledge about the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. They emailed the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation the same day to share their experience and express their gratitude.
Matthew’s passion for marine life hasn’t gone unnoticed by his peers and mentors.
“Fellow Hanauma Bay Education Program volunteers and staff have enjoyed working with Matthew these last few months, and we're glad his enthusiasm shows in his interactions with visitors,” said Morgan Mamizuka, Volunteer Program Coordinator.
His involvement at Hanauma Bay is part of our weekly High School Mentorship Program, which connects students like Matthew with real-world experiences that fuel their passions.
“I enjoy teaching the visitors about the marine life and new facts about the animals they see at the Bay,” Matthew said. “I want to study to become a marine biologist, and I like the organization of Hanauma Bay.”
Matthew has embraced multiple mentorship opportunities, previously participating at the Manoa Heritage Center and in our Growing Green Mentorship. Every Wednesday, students at our High School participate in the Mentorship Program. Students in ninth grade do mentorships on campus. 10th to 12th-grade students can choose one of more than 400 Mentorship Partners. If you want to be a Mentorship Partner, contact Dean of Student Life and Mentorship Coordinator Jason Wagner at jwagner@assets-school.org or call 808-423-1356.
