HONOLULU (KHON2) — Assets School presented a donation of canned goods and nonperishable food to Hawaii Foodbank on Dec. 3, marking National Giving Tuesday.
The school’s trustees, parents, families, faculty, and staff have been collecting food since November to support local families in need, contributing more than 500 meals to the effort.
Amy Miller, president and CEO of Hawaii Foodbank, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from Assets School.
“Hawaii Foodbank would like to thank Assets School for all of the ways in which they support our work,” Miller said. “Assets not only provides donations each year through their annual food drive, but they also partner with the Foodbank to offer valuable learning opportunities through Assets’ Mentorship Program. We are grateful for these efforts to nourish our ohana today while also teaching students about caring for our community.”
The Assets Mentorship Program, which began in the early 1990s, has partnered with the Hawaii Foodbank since 2019.
Through the program, students gain hands-on experience with food insecurity by assisting with food donations, workshops, outreach, and educational programs.
“Mentees at the Hawai’i Foodbank learn about food insecurity in Hawaii, help with donation intake, and support various Foodbank functions,” said Jason Wagner, Dean of Student Life and Mentorship Coordinator. “Students who mentor must have compassion, dedication, and a strong commitment to the Foodbank’s mission: ‘to nourish our ohana today while we work to end hunger tomorrow.’”
Assets School has supported the Hawai’i Foodbank for over 25 years, with this year’s donation further strengthening their long-standing commitment to fighting hunger in the community.
