By Edel Yamane, Teacher of 2nd and 3rd Grade Students
It’s hard to believe that 35 years have passed since I first walked through the doors of Assets School. My journey began at the Pearl Harbor Navy Shipyard, in what was then old barracks, far from the beautiful, modern facility we have now in the K - 4 Village. Over the years, I have witnessed so many changes, both in the physical space and within myself as an educator. But through it all, one thing has remained constant: the incredible opportunity to grow, learn, and make a meaningful impact on the lives of the students I serve.
When I started here, I never could have imagined the ways this job would shape my career and my life. From the early days in a temporary portable classroom to the new facility we enjoy today, every step of this journey has been filled with purpose and passion. I’ve had the privilege of taking countless classes and workshops over the years, each one further enriching my ability to teach and support my students in new and more effective ways.
Some of the most valuable experiences have been the summers I spent training in methods like Spalding, Slingerland, Orton Gillingham, and Mortensen Math. These programs not only refined my skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of how children learn differently. Each method I’ve learned has contributed to my ability to meet my students where they are and guide them on their individual learning journeys.
The opportunity to continually grow professionally has been one of the greatest gifts of my career. Every day, I learn something new, whether it’s a new teaching technique, a different way to approach a challenge, or a lesson from a student. The joy of learning never fades, and I feel incredibly fortunate to work in an environment like Assets School that encourages continuous growth and exploration.
Beyond the professional development, it’s the people that truly make this place special. Over the years, I have formed friendships that have become like family. We’ve supported each other through the highs and lows, and I have learned so much from my colleagues, mentors, and even my wonderful students. The bonds I’ve formed here will last a lifetime.
And then, of course, there are the service cats (Munchie, Buddy, Gray Papa and Notch). Over the years, we’ve had a few four-legged friends come and go, and each one has carved out a special place in my heart. There’s something uniquely comforting about the presence of these animals, whether they’re curling up on a bench or simply wandering the halls, they bring a sense of calm and joy to Assets.
I am so deeply thankful for the chance to join the Assets School community. The challenges that come with teaching, particularly in a setting where students may need to learn in non-traditional ways, are not always easy. One piece of advice that has stuck with me over the years is something a mentor once said: “If you’re not challenged, you’re not growing.” I’ve carried this idea with me throughout my career. My students face their own challenges every day, but they meet those challenges with determination, resilience, and a commitment to succeed. They never give up, and that makes me proud to be their teacher.
I’ve never been someone who likes to be in the public eye, but I feel compelled to share the profound impact that Assets School has had on my professional life and the lives of the many students who have walked through our doors. It is a place where learning happens, yes, but it is also a place where lives are transformed, hearts are touched, and communities are built.
To all the people I’ve met on this incredible journey, students, colleagues, mentors, and friends, I offer a heartfelt Mahalo. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the friendship. I am truly grateful for every moment of my time here, and I look forward to the continued journey ahead.
Here’s to many more years of learning, growing, and making a difference together. I support Assets School annually and hope you will consider joining me.
