Assets Senior earns Honorable Mention Award for still-life painting

Sydney '23 earned an Honorable Mention Award for her still-life painting titled "Sunflower" from the competitive Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition.

The art medium is oil paint on canvas.

"She demonstrates great dedication to her art," said High School art teacher Mark Maresca. "Her technical skills are strong. Her award is very impressive."

"When I received an email from Mr. Maresca that I'd gotten an honorable mention I was very pleased and proud that the hours I dedicated to the piece paid off," said Sydney '23.

When working on Sunflower, Sydney said, "I really enjoyed the composition of this painting and pushing the colors to have more contrast in the painting than they did in life."

Math teacher Laura Young also supported Sydney's work with the Flex program. The Flex program is where students create a line of study under the direction of a teacher.

In the future, Sydney plans to work with portraits.

"For now art is a passion and hobby of mine but in the future, I hope to do freelance work with it," she said.

Sydney joined Assets as a senior in the fall, and she'll be graduating in May.  She plans to attend college.
